Ekster Vacuum Kit Pro vs Ridge Vacuum Packing Set: Which One Should You Pack?

Ridge just launched its Vacuum Packing Set. Welcome to the club. We saved you a seat (and about 70% of your suitcase).

Honestly, we take it as a compliment. Not long ago, vacuum bags for travel were a niche packing hack. Now every brand with a travel section wants one, and we've watched enough lookalikes appear since our first kit to know the category is officially a thing.

So if you're trying to decide between the new Ridge set and our TravelPack™ Vacuum Kit Pro, here's a straight side-by-side. Where Ridge does something well, we'll say so. We're confident enough to.

A few honest notes on the table:

  • Both bags keep water out. Ridge lists an IPX7 rating on its zipper and valve. We don't put a number on ours, but the Vacuum Kit Pro is fully airtight, so it's waterproof and odor-proof too. Leaky shampoo bottle, meet your match.
  • Both promise roughly the same squeeze. The difference is that we tell you how much actually goes in before it gets squeezed.
  • The price gap is not small. One bag with a pump is $20 cheaper with Ekster, and the gap gets a lot wider once you add more bags.

Capacity: the number Ridge didn't print

Compression percentages are nice. But the question you're actually asking at 11 pm the night before a flight is simpler: will my stuff fit?

The Vacuum Kit Pro holds around 27L, which works out to 15+ days of clothing in one sealed bag. Its wider, boxier shape means clothes settle evenly instead of piling up in one corner, so you use every liter you paid for.

Ridge doesn't list a capacity for its bag. You get a compression claim, but not the size of what's being compressed.

Want proof that this turns a carry-on into a two-week bag? We packed for two weeks and documented every item in our carry-on case study.

Packing it shouldn't feel like stuffing a sleeping bag

Most vacuum bags have one narrow opening and a lot of optimism. You feed clothes in one by one, then do the whole thing in reverse when you need a single T-shirt.

We fixed that.

1. A half-clamshell opening. The Vacuum Kit Pro opens from the top like a regular bag, so you lay clothes in flat and lift them out the same way. Flat packing also means fewer creases when you unpack.

2. A transparent front window. Three sealed bags, one swimsuit, zero idea which bag it's in? Not anymore. You can see what's inside without breaking the seal.

3. Reinforced, fully sealed seams. This is where cheap vacuum bags quietly fail, letting air creep back in until your "compressed" bag looks like a pillow by day three.

Ridge's set uses a standard zip seal with a valve. It works, but you're packing through a regular opening into a bag you can only partly see into.

Off the shelf vs built from scratch

Here's a bit of insider info. Ridge's bag is based on a mass-produced, off-the-shelf design that's sold under plenty of brand names. We know it well, because we considered it too.

Then we read the reviews. The same three complaints kept coming up, so we designed the Pro from scratch to fix each one:

1. "It's a pain to pack." A narrow zip opening means stuffing clothes in and fishing them back out. Our half-clamshell opening and boxier shape make the Pro the most effortless vacuum bag we've ever packed and unpacked.

2. "It doesn't compress evenly." With the nozzle off to the side, air leaves from one corner and the rest of the bag bunches up. The Pro is shaped so clothes settle flat and squeeze down evenly.

3. "It loses its seal." Generic bags tend to slowly refill with air mid-trip. With reinforced seams along a thicker edge, the Pro holds its compression for days, not hours.

Same idea on paper. Very different bag in your suitcase.

The pump: small, rechargeable, and actually counted

Good news first: both kits use a rechargeable USB-C pump, so nobody's hunting for AA batteries at the airport.

The Vacuum Kit Pro's Air Pump fits in a jacket pocket and gets up to 45 uses on a single charge. That's several trips' worth of sealing before it needs a cable.

It's also TSA-approved, so it can ride in your carry-on or your checked bag without a security-line conversation. (Our guide to vacuum travel bags and TSA rules has the details.)

Ridge calls its pump rechargeable and ready to go, but doesn't say how many uses you get per charge. On a two-week trip where you're resealing every few days, that's a number worth knowing.

PACK SMARTER FOR LESS

Let's talk money

One bag plus pump: $99 with Ekster, $119 with Ridge.

Here's the thing, though. Almost nobody stops at one bag. There's the clothes bag, the dirty laundry bag, and the bag for souvenirs that definitely didn't exist on the way out.

For $119, the price of one Ridge set, you get our 2-pack. Our 4-pack brings it down to about $42 a bag. Ridge's 3-pack is $257, or roughly $86 a bag. That's a difference you could spend on an actual vacation.

And as of writing, Ridge's set is sold out in both sizes, so even if you wanted one, you'd be waiting.

Make your luggage unlosable

A perfectly packed bag is only useful if it lands where you do. Slip a Tracker Card into your suitcase and it shows up in Apple Find My or Google Find Hub, whichever phone you carry.

Make it ring at the hotel, see it on a map at the airport, and get an alert if it gets left behind. No subscription needed.

Curious how much difference that makes on the road? Here's how luggage trackers are changing travel.

TLDR: the Vacuum Kit Pro packs more for less

Ridge has made a decent first vacuum kit, and both bags will keep your clothes dry.

But the Vacuum Kit Pro gives you a published 27L capacity, a half-clamshell opening, a front window, and a pump rated for up to 45 uses per charge. It's also custom-designed to fix what people dislike about off-the-shelf vacuum bags, and it's the one with a Red Dot Design Award.

And it costs $20 less for one bag, and less than half as much per bag in a 4-pack.

Both bags are waterproof: Ridge lists an IPX7 rating, and the Vacuum Kit Pro is fully airtight and odor-proof.

How much does the Ridge Vacuum Packing Set cost?
Ridge lists it at $119 for a single set and $257 for a 3-pack. Both were sold out in October 2026.

How many days of clothes fit in the Vacuum Kit Pro?
Around 15+ days. Each bag holds about 27L of clothing and saves up to 70% of the space those clothes would normally take.

Can I bring a vacuum bag pump on a plane?
Yes. The Vacuum Kit Pro's Air Pump is TSA-approved, so you can pack it in a carry-on or a checked bag.
